George M. Alexander
editGeorge M. Alexander (born May 18, 1946) is an American musician best known as the bassist and vocalist for the rock and roll band Flamin' Groovies. Active with the group for more than three decades, Alexander contributed to all of the band’s studio albums and participated in numerous live performances during his tenure.[1]
Early life
editAlexander was born in San Mateo, California, on May 18, 1946. He developed an early interest in music, influenced by artists such as Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, The Kinks, and Mozart.[1]
Career
editFlamin' Groovies
editIn 1965, Alexander co-founded the Flamin' Groovies in San Francisco, California, alongside Roy Loney, Cyril Jordan, Tim Lynch, and Ron Greco.[2][circular reference] He served as the band's bass guitarist and contributed harmonica and backing vocals.[1]
Alexander played on every studio album released by the band during his original tenure and was part of all major live performances from 1965 to 1987.[3] He later rejoined the group for their reformation from 2013 to 2016, during which the band toured and recorded again, culminating in the 2017 release of Fantastic Plastic.[4]
The Flamin' Groovies released music on several labels over the decades, including Snazz, Epic, Kama Sutra, United Artists, Sire, Aim, Severn, and Skydog.[2]
Other occupations
editOutside of music, Alexander worked as a school bus operator for the San Francisco Unified School District for 10 years and later as a postal mail handler for the United States Postal Service in San Francisco for 25 years.[1]
Legacy
editAlexander’s work helped shape the Flamin' Groovies' garage rock and power pop sound, influencing underground and alternative rock scenes in the United States and internationally. His long tenure made him one of the most consistent and recognizable figures in the band’s evolving lineup.[2]
