  • Our GHFMO crews were getting in some reps on our new vertical ventilation training prop. With roof conditions being uncertain during structure fires, fire fighters need to be mindful of safety and the proper techniques of venting. Check it out...

I came across your video by accident and love it. If you don't mind, Dick, as a retired truck captain I'd like to share a couple of thoughts regarding your steep pitch roof operation that may be of some benefit when lecturing on this particular operation. To begin with, I realize you're using manufactured roof props with designating cutting areas, but as someone with a ton of experience venting steep pitch roofs with both axes and chain saws, here are a few considerations that may be of some benefit: (1) Have a step pitch roof plan that is not complicated and can be easily communicated on site. (2) Roofs are ALWAYS steeper than they look from the ground. (3) When using a Roof Ladder, ladder as aggressively as possible near the seat of the fire as it is impractical to reposition a roof ladder during the course of a roof ladder ventilation operation. (4) Begin your cuts as high as possible near the "ridgeboard" as the bulk of heat/combustible gasses are concentrated the roofs apex as opposed to say a roof with a 4:12 pitch where said gasses will be distributed over a much broader area. (5) Unlike your guys did where they made their initial cuts, repositioned, and then louvered the roof decking, I suggest making your initial hole even if it's not the optimal size and open it immediately. Again, unlike a shallower pitched roof, the bulk of the heat and gasses are concentrated at the top; by making a quick hole and opening it immediately you'll provide immediate relief for those engaged in interior fire attack. (6) Whenever engaged in a firefight involving a steep pitched roof, both the engine and truck must be on the same page. If the vent team has laddereed properly and cut at the apex, then because of the pitch you be unable to "punch" the ceiling. As such, the interior companies should know this and therefore it is their responsibility "pull" ceiling as oppose to the vent team "punching" the ceiling in order to gain relief. Sorry for the rant. Hope this makes sense.
