Bandar Aceh Darussalam (also known by its exonym as Atchyn, Achem, or Atjeh), was the royal and the commercial capital of the Aceh Sultanate, situated in the northern tip of coastal Sumatra, it once served as one of the main entrepôt for the maritime spice trade in the 16th and the 17th century. The city is said to be established on 1 Ramadhan 601 H in the Islamic calendar (corresponding to 22 April 1205 CE in the Gregorian calendar) by a person named Sultan Johan Syah, according to local annals.
The city of Bandar Aceh Darussalam became the capital of the Sultanate of Aceh during the reign of Ali Mughayat Syah who conquered the region in the mid-early 16th century, the city was contested in 1521 after a fierce battle between the Acehnese and the Portuguese who tried to capture the city, but the Acehnese came with a victorious outcome. Centuries of Acehnese kings, the Acehnese were finally lose a grip of the city after the Dutch East Indies conquered the city in 1874 during the Aceh War. It also became the place where the last sultan of Aceh, Daud Syah II was abdicated in 1903.
